Chickens = No Food Waste - Reel

Hello everyone, market week is kicking off and this market garden loves showcasing fresh veggies by leaving the greens still attached whenever possible. From radishes, kohlrabi, beet, turnips to even carrots! We do this for a couple of wonderful reasons.

🐓🐤

1. Most of the greens are 100% edible and super nutritious. It’s a great way to get the most bang for your buck, by utilizing all the edible parts of the plant. Most greens make a killer pesto or chimichurri sauce, try them chopped up and added into any pasta dishes, savoury pies, veggie fritters, or fry them up with your favourite oil, garlic and chilies. Some work great raw in salads, as lettuce wraps or in smoothies and juices. You can remove the tops and freeze for whenever you make a homemade broth! Try them dehydrated as a healthy chip option or once dehydrated you can grind them up for a clean green powder for smoothies or protein shakes.

2. It represents how fresh the product is. When you are searching at market and see the tops still attached, you’ll know that produce item was harvested recently. Our harvest days are on Thursday and Friday for our weekend markets and on Wednesday for deliveries and pick ups on Thursday’s. Can’t get much fresher than that!

3. If you do not want the tops left on your veggies we will happily cut and collect them in bins to bring home to give to our chickens and ducks as a treat. This eliminates any food waste and our animals end up eating the best spray free produce we can offer.

4. In the reel it shows a couple of our compost bins going to our birds. Happy and healthy birds = great quality eggs and meat! If you are in search for multi-coloured farm fresh eggs we will be bringing them along to the Sylvan Lake and Red Deer markets or try ordering them online on our website.
