Greenhouse Beds + Worm Castings
Here at Thistle Hill Farms, we create permanent growing beds and walk paths. Which helps us greatly years down the road by keeping the soil looser similar to a sponge, ready to soak up moisture especially great during rainy seasons. Non compacted soil makes it much easier to plant in and we can get into the fields earlier than most. We aren’t bringing up new weed seeds by tilling every year, we only have to deal with whatever we missed like hardy perennials and blow ins seeds. All while keeping the soil food web in tact.

Every year we add organic material into our beds in many different ways. In the spring we tend to use large amounts of worm casting. The worm colony has recently been loving tomatoes skins from our homemade sauce, our daily coffee grounds and crushed egg shells. In return they give us black gold compost. In the fall we add well aged chicken, horse, elk and cow compost to our growing beds. I will link below our worm casting post that we did last year if you would like to read the benefits of using them. https://thistlehillfarms.ca/journal/soil-health-with-worms

We’re grateful to have our greenhouses all situated and we’re fully harvesting from them now. Our focus switches to finishing our nursery that will house most of our tomatoes this year and we are converting one-two acres of grazing area into more growing area. Next reel will be our 2025 potato selection and planting, stay tuned for that!
