Veggie Of The Week; Radishes

We have been making homemade juices for quite some time now and we love it! Making it fresh daily make us feel amazing and it’s a great way to use fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and micro greens.

We’ll be posting weekly, picking one produce out of our juices and deep dive into the health benefits and cooking info!

This week let’s discuss radishes. Now, many folks believe the little red radish are the only variety but that is completely untrue. Radishes can be found in almost every colour; red, pink, white, purple, black, green and yellow. Most commonly known for its round shape but many different varieties will grow into long tubers and can range in weight.

Now that you know that radishes can be very different in appearance it should be no surprise that they can taste extremely differently as well. Certain kinds are often served with tea and cakes because of their overall sweetness. Others produce a lovely heat that will make your mouth water and you can also find milder varieties that have almost no heat but aren’t considered sweet.

This year our goal is to produce a lovely range of all colours, shapes and flavours. Currently we have a daikon radish - purple bravo, great winter radish with beautiful colouring that ranges from white to purple. We find these fall in the mild-mid heat range.

Our personal favourite way to incorporate this veggie into meals is leaving them raw, thinly sliced or mandolin. The crunch factor and flavour is the best in its natural form. When we ask our customers at markets how they eat radishes almost 99% of them said raw and straight up but did you know they are awesome cooked? Try them sliced and then fried into a crispy chips or add into stir fry as your textural component. Pairs well with stews or potato dishes like potato casserole and gratins. Note that the flavour and heat lowers once cooked.

Looking forward to showing y’all our spring radishes in a couple of months!
