Edible Flowers, Micro Greens and Epic Blends

Have you had the chance to try our edible flowers, micro greens or epic blends yet? The summer solstice is the perfect time to start adding these sun loving plants into your weekly meals.

They are ridiculously nutrient dense, packed full of different flavours, textures and are stunning to the eye. Always harvested within 24 hours of appearing in pre orders, produce boxes or at our booth at the Sylvan Lake, Red Deer and Old Strathcona Farmers' Market.

Micros Blend consists of every micro we grow in our weekly rotation. Right now it is pea shoots, buckwheat, radishes, purple kohlrabi and broccoli.

Epic Blend consists mainly of the micros blend but we also add in edible leaves and flowers. Find red vein sorrel, pansies, violas, bachelor buttons, chive blossoms, nasturtium leaves and flowers all included in this stunning blend. Both these blends work perfectly as garnishes to any and all dishes. Use as a stand alone with a light vinaigrette dressing or mix with other leafy greens to create the most sophisticated salad or slaw ever.

Edible flowers are used in different blends ranging from spicy to peppery and even slightly mild. Some work great in savoury applications and many work well in both sweet and savoury. The owners and growers at markets will always be happy to point you in the right culinary direction.

“Flowers are not typically found in everyday meals, so their deliberate inclusion in a dish makes that dish something special, a treat for the receiver. They send a message of freshness and of caring. In some cultures, specific flowers are ritually used to mark festivals and special occasions. In this way, their appearance in a dish elevates it to something beyond the ordinary. There can also be a health benefit to eating flowers. Since early times, traditional healers have studied the medicinal properties of a wide range of flowers, many of which are still found today in herbal remedies and supplements.”
