First Kohlrabi of the Year!
Spring kohlrabi is simply the best. What’s not to love? The whole plant is edible and really freaking tasty.
We will have 3 different colours to choose from this year, green, white and purple. White comes across the creamiest but the purple is the most nutrient dense and all are stunning. The first small batch went into Produce Boxes this week and some will be coming with us to the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market this Saturday.
The leaves as shown in the photos are the best ‘wrap’ green that we have found. It has great texture that holds everything together with a slight brassica flavour. We also love to chop up the greens and add into pasta sauces, savoury pies, salads, sautéed with garlic and chilies, and in stir fries. Toss some into your juicer or blender for super healthy green smoothie and juice. When you are shopping for kohlrabi and see that the plant has its leaves still on, that a great sign its been recently harvested. Remove the greens when you get home, it will keep the bulb juicer.
The bulb is perfectly juicy and makes great base for coleslaws, Asian or apple slaws, add into salads, sliced thin with a splash of lemon juice and salt and pepper for a quick but healthy snack or slice them thin and lay the pieces flat on a sandwich or wrap for the biggest wow factor ever. Love juicing the bulbs or hallowing them out and baking them stuffed with rice, cheese, meat and veggies. Cube them up and roast them in the oven with seasonal herbs, lemon juice and your favourite oil. They are even great on the BBQ.
